China's National FOQA Program places huge demand on new GroundLink® Comm+ wireless transmission technology.
El Segundo, CA - October 2016
Teledyne Controls, the global aircraft data and information management business, has set a new record for the number of GroundLink® Comm+ multi-application communication systems installed on aircraft operated by the world's airlines.
With approximately 2,300 units being delivered in 2016, the total number of GroundLink® units delivered across the globe has surpassed 10,000.
It means that almost 70% of the current generation Airbus aircraft and half of the Boeing aircraft now use Teledyne Controls' technology to automatically transmit essential flight data as soon as the aircraft is on the ground. It is credited with making a significant contribution to further improving flight safety and operational performance.
A major contributor to this milestone has been the extraordinary demand from operators in China following the launch of the CAAC (Civil Aviation Administration of China) National FOQA Program. The regulator has issued a recommendation that all existing aircraft operating under CCAR 121 in China be equipped with wireless data recorders and mandated that new aircraft be delivered with wireless from July 1, 2016. All aircraft in this category must send their data to the CAAC National FOQA Center.
By 2017, 95% of the aircraft in China will be operating Teledyne's GroundLink® technology to wirelessly transmit FOQA data to a dedicated Data Center operated by the China Academy of Civil Aviation Science and Technology (CAST). The ultimate goal is to collect and share data to inform the Chinese aviation industry's safety policies, standards and future regulation by analysing current and future trends.
Interviewed at the 2016 Technology and Users Forum, hosted by Teledyne Controls in October, Mr Xie Zi Nan, Deputy Director General of CAST, said that he sees Teledyne Controls playing a very important role in helping the regulator to achieve its objectives for its FOQA programme: "We can especially learn from Teledyne's knowledge of new technology and experience working with other airlines in other parts of the world."
Chuck Tamburo, Senior Director, Sales and Service for Teledyne Controls in the Asia Pacific Region, says that the launch of the CAAC FOQA Program is helping to fuel sales growth: "All of the major airlines in China have been using our wireless technology for a number of years and we are now working closely with CAST and the airlines to support China's ambition of further improving flight safety and meeting the needs of managing 'big data' in the future."
