  • RAF selects Teledyne's Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) solution

London, UK - November 2019 - The Royal Air Force (RAF) has selected AirFASE® - a leading flight data analysis (FDA) tool from Teledyne Controls - to monitor and measure the safety and operational performance of its current and future fleet of 22 Airbus A400M Atlas aircraft.

The RAF has also chosen to supplement AirFASE with one of Teledyne's FDA+® add-on modules, Measurement Capture, to routinely gather specific data measurements for an array of project purposes.

As a ground software solution, AirFASE is designed to meet the most demanding requirements for the safety-related discipline of Flight Data Monitoring and Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) programs.  Teledyne Controls offers AirFASE and FDA+ software as deliverable products or as part of a hosted analysis solution, both providing valuable insight into aircraft operations through the application of analyses against recorded flight data.

Outputs from AirFASE help operators better understand and monitor their operational issues.  By translating aircraft data into meaningful information, AirFASE allows operators to evaluate flight operation trends, identify risk precursors and initiate information-based preventive and corrective actions.  Already used by more airlines worldwide than any other FDM solution, the AirFASE platform also supports MFOQA activity in a growing number of military platforms.

Procured by the Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) team at the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), AirFASE and FDA+ will be used within an FDM cell at RAF Brize Norton, while a mobile solution will allow data processing at other RAF stations if the need for remote data processing arises.

Tracy Barry, Director FDA Products at Teledyne Controls, says that AirFASE and FDA+ will provide the RAF with a detailed insight into A400M operations and identify potential operational risk: “The RAF is leading the way in flight data management and analysis and the selection of the AirFASE and FDA+ tools will bring the dual benefit of further enhancing safety while delivering optimum operational efficiency. We expect AirFASE and FDA+ to be of interest to any military operator that is flying strategic air mobility (tankers, freighter, passenger & VIP operations) and ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) aircraft."

The purchase of AirFASE and FDA+ is the first purchase of an FDM system by DE&S since the release of Regulation RA1205, which identifies FDM as a requirement as part of a safety case for any aircraft type.

Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) is a trading entity and joint-defence organisation within the UK Ministry of Defence. A bespoke trading entity, it manages a vast range of complex projects to buy and support all the equipment and services that the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force need to operate effectively. The DE&S A400M Atlas delivery team, based at MOD Abbey Wood and Brize Norton, is delivering the Atlas aircraft for the RAF and will to ensure that this fleet of aircraft is fully delivered and qualified for UK operations.
